Metro Line 3 Alternative Routes
On Hold, began November 2012
Proposed alternative station locations for Metro Line 3, which would have less damaging effects on Zamalek’s urban environment.
The Association formed a team of experts from among residents to study the Government’s proposed Underground Metro Line 3 Project, which is planned to cross under Zamalek, and to evaluate the possible impacts this project could have on the Island and its inhabitants. The team produced a report outlining some of the consequences digging Metro Line 3 under Zamalek could have on the safety of some buildings and historical villas located on its route, and it pointed to some of the environmental, traffic, and security problems the proposed location for the new Metro Station in Ismail Mohamed Street can cause to the neighborhood.
The report proposed four different alternative routes and station locations for Metro Line 3, which would have less damaging effects on Zamalek’s urban environment. The Association presented the report to the Ministry of Transportation, as well as to the European Investment Bank (EIB) financing the project. Recently, the National Authority of Tunnels (NAT) announced that proposed Metro Line 3 project is going ahead as originally planned.
